High School Roundup: Huntington Beach loses Bailey, game versus Lynwood

The Huntington Beach High girls’ basketball team was shut down in a 42-14 loss to Lynwood in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz., on Tuesday.

The bad news did not stop there for the Oilers (5-3), as Huntington Beach coach Russell McClurg said that the team may have lost its starting center, Zoie Bailey, for an extended period with a separated shoulder. No timetable has been established for the senior’s return.

In its tournament opener on Tuesday, Huntington Beach picked up a 39-30 win over ThunderRidge of Highlands Ranch, Colo.

McClurg is three wins shy of 400 for his coaching career.

Costa Mesa 79, Capistrano Valley Christian 20: Katie Belmontes had a game-high 22 points to lead the Mustangs (4-5) in the Liberty Christian Tournament on Wednesday.

Kiarra Garcia added 19 points, and Samantha Filner chipped in with 12 points.

Los Altos 45, Edison 34: Ashley Niemand had 11 points and six blocked shot for the Chargers (3-4) in a pool-play game of the Lakewood Mayfair Winter Classic on Wednesday.

Gabby Samiy added nine points and three blocked shot.

Edison takes on Riverside Patriot at Mayfair High on Thursday at 6 p.m.

WRESTLING

Corona del Mar 48, University 32: The visiting Sea Kings recorded all eight of their victories by way of pin in a Pacific Coast League match on Wednesday.

Sea Kings coach Mark Alex noted that freshman Wayne Muse ranked among the strong performers, recording a third-period pin at 120 pounds.

Alex added that sophomore Chase Zanck’s pin at 182 pounds was a momentum-changer in the match. Freshman Luke Anderson capped the match with a pin of his own at 285 pounds.

CdM (4-3, 2-0 in league) has more league wins than it had all of last season, when the Sea Kings’ lone league victory came at Northwood.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Laguna Beach 1, Mission Viejo 1: Senior Carson Cushing scored for the Breakers in a nonleague match on the road Wednesday.

Laguna Beach (5-2-1) plays at Aliso Niguel on Jan. 5.

Trabuco Hills 2, Fountain Valley 1: The visiting Barons fell to 3-3-1 after Wednesday’s nonleague contest.
