High School Roundup: Costa Mesa runs away from Western at Coach Mike’s Long Shot Challenge

Junior guard Osman Hefner finished with 23 points, leading the Costa Mesa High boys’ basketball team to a 64-36 rout of Western in the Coach Mike’s Long Shot Challenge at home on Monday night.

The Mustangs outscored Western 28-10 in the second quarter, taking a 38-18 lead into halftime.

Nico Dasca had 18 points for Costa Mesa (8-7), while Tre Villalpando added 11 points.

Costa Mesa resumes Orange Coast League play on Wednesday. The Mustangs, who are tied for first place with Laguna Beach at 2-0, are at home against defending league champion Godinez.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 73, Savanna 65 (OT): Sophomore point guard Dominick Harris led the Tritons with 23 points in the Coach Mike’s Long Shot Challenge at Corona del Mar High on Monday.

Pacifica Christian (7-12) came back from a 16-point deficit in the third quarter. The Tritons outscored Savanna 12-4 in overtime.

Josh Sims finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds for the Tritons, and Josh Griffith had 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Primo Belfiore added 11 points.

Pacifica Christian, ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section 5AAA, hosts Capistrano Valley Christian in a San Joaquin League game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Newport Harbor 62, Norco 37: Junior guard Sam Barela produced 16 points for the Sailors in Monday’s game during the Coach Mike’s Long Shot Challenge at Costa Mesa High.

Robbie Spooner and Dayne Chalmers each had 13 points for Newport Harbor (15-5), ranked No. 12 in CIF Southern Section Division 2A.

The Sailors play at home against Marina in Sunset League action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Newport Harbor is 2-1 in league, a game back of first-place Edison, while the Vikings are 1-2.

Ocean View 61, El Toro 52: Senior Seth Mishler made five three-pointers and finished with 17 points for the Seahawks in the Coach Mike’s Long Shot Challenge at Costa Mesa High on Monday.

Ocean View’s Paul Head contributed 14 points and seven assists, and Mehkel Harvey had 12 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Ocean View (15-4), ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 3AA, travels to Westminster for a 7:30 p.m. Golden West League game on Wednesday. The Seahawks are 2-0 in league.

San Gabriel Academy 65, Corona del Mar 61: Senior guard Kevin Kobrine led the host Sea Kings with 22 points in the Coach Mike’s Long Shot Challenge on Monday.

CdM (11-6), ranked No. 16 in CIF Southern Section Division 2AA, played without sophomore John Humphreys. Coach Ryan Schachter said his 6-foot-5 starter was out sick.

Jack Garza had 19 points for CdM.

The Sea Kings host Northwood in the Pacific Coast League on Tuesday at 7 p.m. They are in second place in league at 1-1, a game behind Northwood.
