High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ basketball gets past Marina

Junior guard Sam Barela finished with 15 points in Newport Harbor High’s 49-41 win against visiting Marina in a Sunset League boys’ basketball game on Wednesday night.

Brad Siegel and Dayne Chalmers had nine points each for the Sailors (16-5, 3-1 in league), ranked No. 15 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A poll.

Newport Harbor plays at Los Alamitos on Friday at 7 p.m.

Jakob Alamudun had 17 points for Marina (11-9, 1-3), No. 9 in Division 3A, which hosts Fountain Valley on Friday at 7 p.m.

Laguna Beach 73, Estancia 40: Senior guard Blake Burzell led the Breakers with 19 points, helping them stay undefeated in the Orange Coast League on Wednesday.

Laguna Beach’s Charlie Rounaghi contributed 15 points.

The Breakers (18-3, 3-0 in league), ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 3AA, play host to Costa Mesa (9-7, 3-0) in a first-place showdown at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Costa Mesa 57, Godinez 49: Junior guard Tre Villalpando produced 17 points for the Mustangs, who improved to 3-0 in the Orange Coast League on Wednesday.

Osman Hefner had 15 points for Costa Mesa (9-7 overall), while Nico Dasca added 10 points.

Edison 66, Fountain Valley 40: Senior guard David Atencio’s 23 points led the way for the host Chargers on Wednesday.

Spencer Serven finished with 11 points for Edison (15-5, 4-0 in league), and Josh Phillips had nine blocked shots.

The Chargers are at home against Huntington Beach on Friday at 7 p.m.

Ocean View 74, Westminster 53: Senior guard Paul Head had 35 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the visiting Seahawks, helping them improve to 3-0 in the Golden West League on Wednesday.

Mehkel Harvey had 13 points, 20 rebounds and eight blocked shots for Ocean View (16-4 overall), ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division 3AA.

The Seahawks host Santa Ana on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 22, Fountain Valley 2: Kaela Whelan and Annie Rankin each scored four goals for the Sailors in a Sunset League game at home on Wednesday.

Linnea Kelly, Kili Skibby and Jessica Lynch all scored three goals for the Sailors (8-6, 2-1 in league), ranked No. 11 in CIF Southern Section Division 1 and 2. Karis Couch, Sarah Barker, Olivia Giolas, Emily Cantu and Nikki Clark added single goals.

Erin Ross made seven saves for Newport Harbor, which plays host to Santa Margarita on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Estancia 7, Godinez 5: Mackenzie McIntyre, Sydni White and Annie Mitchell all had two goals for the Eagles in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League game at Costa Mesa High.

Gidget Brestel added a goal for Estancia (4-5, 1-1 in league), which got 13 saves in goal for Annie Mitchell and two from Zora McPhail.

Estancia plays host to Bolsa Grande on Thursday at 5 p.m.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 4, Northwood 0: Kennedy Campbell had two goals for the host Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League game.

Ava McKenzie and Kate Montgomery also scored for the Sea Kings (9-2-3, 3-0-0 in league), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 2. Giovanna Broderick made four saves and Shannon Duss had two.

CdM plays host to Irvine on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Edison 1, Fountain Valley 0: Michael Guptill scored for the host Chargers in Tuesday’s Sunset League game.

Edison (7-5-4, 3-2-0 in league) plays at Huntington Beach on Thursday at 5 p.m. Fountain Valley (11-5-2, 1-3-1) plays host to Marina on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Marina 4, Newport Harbor 3: Kaitlyn Paculba scored two goals for the Vikings in a Sunset League game Tuesday at home.

Autumn Opperud and Erika Sosa also scored for the Vikings (14-3-3, 3-2-0 in league), ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division 2.

Reese Bodas had two goals for Newport Harbor (7-8-3, 0-4-1), and Mackenzie Trigo also scored.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Tarbut V’ Torah 2: Alyssa Smith, Brooklyn Motske and Buze Harrison all scored for the Tritons in the San Joaquin League game on the road Wednesday.

The Carlson sisters, Casie and Corrine, both had an assist for Pacifica Christian (10-1-0, 2-1-0 in league). Jo Snider made six saves.

Pacifica Christian plays a league game at The Webb School of Claremont on Friday at 6 p.m.
