High school roundup: Belman places third at CIF girls’ wrestling finals

Huntington Beach High senior Chloe Belman finished third in the 143-pound weight class in the CIF Southern Section Girls’ Wrestling Championships at Eastvale Roosevelt High on Saturday.

Third-seeded Belman, who qualified for the state meet in advancing to the championship semifinals of the tournament on Friday night, lost a 6-4 decision against Covina Northview’s Julia Padilla.

In the third-place match, Belman rebounded to pin Roosevelt’s Cheyanne Williams late in the second period.

Belman will compete at the girls’ state championship meet in Visalia on Feb. 23-24.

Three additional locals entered the day with an opportunity to join Belman as state qualifiers. However, Corona del Mar’s Kiersten Muse (137), Ocean View’s Angie Vu (150) and Huntington Beach’s Breanne Raya (170) were all defeated by fall in their fourth-round consolation matches, ending their seasons.

BOYS’ WRESTLING

Five members of Ocean View High’s wrestling team qualified for the CIF Southern Section Coastal Division finals on Saturday in the Golden West League finals at Santa Ana High.

Raxel Ortiz (120 pounds, third), Noah Edsell (126, second), John Martinez (145, third), Will Nguyen (152, second) and Kolby Lane (160, third) placed at league finals to extend their seasons.

The Coastal Division finals will be contested at Westminster High on Feb. 16-17.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 10, Santa Barbara San Marcos 3: Sophia Lucas scored three goals for the Breakers in Friday’s nonleague game at Dos Pueblos High.

Evan Tingler and Nicole Struss each scored twice for Laguna Beach, which ended the regular season 21-2. Thea Walsh made 10 saves.

The Breakers are the No. 2 seed for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs and will have a rematch with San Marcos in the quarterfinals Thursday at home.
