High school roundup: CdM boys’ volleyball goes 3-0 on first day at Best of the West

The Corona del Mar High boys’ volleyball team swept its three pool-play opponents in a best-of-three format on the opening day of the Best of the West Invitational at Alliant International University in San Diego on Friday.

The Sea Kings (4-0) won their pool and open Gold Division bracket play with San Diego Westview on Saturday.

Senior Adam Flood finished with seven kills in the Sea Kings’ 25-13, 25-19 win over Thousand Oaks.

Behind Kevin Kobrine’s nine kills, CdM beat San Diego Del Norte 25-7, 25-18.

Brandon Browning had seven kills for the Sea Kings in a 25-10, 25-20 win against Clovis Buchanan.

Diego Perez produced 20-plus assists against Thousand Oaks and Buchanan.

Newport Harbor, Edison and Huntington Beach also advanced to Saturday’s Gold Division bracket. The Sailors and Chargers won their respective pools, while the Oilers placed second in their pool.

Newport Harbor goes up against Westlake, Edison gets Buchanan, and Huntington Beach faces Manhattan Beach Mira Costa.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Capistrano Valley Christian 1: Senior Josh Griffith finished with 12 kills and five aces in the Tritons’ 25-23, 25-16, 16-25, 25-14 win in a San Joaquin League opener at home on Friday.

Kelley Murphy contributed 11 assists for Pacifica Christian (2-5 overall), while Josh Sims had four blocks.

BASEBALL

Estancia 12, Downey Calvary Chapel 0: Senior Nick Mazur and sophomore Jake Covey combined to throw a no-hitter for the Eagles, who wrapped up Newport Elks Tournament Orange County Division play at home on Friday.

Mazur started, striking out six in five innings, while Covey fanned three in two innings.

Estancia (5-2) plays a nonleague game at Westminster on Monday at 3 p.m.

Newport Harbor 4, Trabuco Hills 2: Senior AJ Stefano went two for two with two runs batted in for the host Sailors in their final game in the Newport Elks Tournament Foothill Division on Friday.

Clay Liolios and Max Crabbe each singled and doubled for Newport Harbor, and James Ferrell was two for three with an RBI.

Finn Springston (1-2) earned the win and Kelly Austin got the save.

The Sailors (4-3) play rival Corona del Mar in a Battle of the Bay doubleheader at UC Irvine’s Anteater Ballpark on Monday. The first game is at 4 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m.

Corona del Mar 6, Tesoro 2: UCLA signee J.T. Schwartz produced a three-run double in the host Sea Kings’ last game in the Frank Lerner Division of the Newport Elks Tournament on Friday.

Blake Butcher and Luc Stuka each had two hits and one RBI for CdM (2-3).

Tommy Wilcox earned the win in relief, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Nolan Dunn picked up the save after striking out three and allowing one hit in two shutout innings.

Laguna Beach 14, Crean Lutheran 3: Senior Grady Morgan hit a grand slam and finished three for four as the visiting Breakers closed out Newport Elks Tournament Costa Mesa Division play on Friday.

Sawyer Chesley was three for three with three RBIs for the Breakers (3-4), who host San Juan Hills in a nonleague game on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Costa Mesa 2, Garden Grove 1: Junior Omar Munoz drove in two runs in the Mustangs’ final Newport Elks Tournament Orange County Division game on the road Friday.

Skylar Manning tossed five innings, giving up one run and three hits while striking out three.

Costa Mesa (3-4) travels to Tustin for a nonleague game at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Calvary Chapel 7, Sage Hill 5: Senior Matt King went three for four with one RBI and two runs for the host Lightning in a Newport Elks Tournament Orange County Division finale on Friday.

Sage Hill (4-2) has a nonleague game at home against Compton Centennial on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Sage Hill 10, St. Margaret’s 8: Adam Hung won twice in singles for the Lightning in an Academy League opener at home Friday.

Emin Torlic, Manu Nanda and Joshua Park also won singles sets for Sage Hill (2-1 overall), which plays at San Marino on Monday at 3:15 p.m. in a nonleague match.

Trabuco Hills 11, Laguna Beach 7: Blake Hawkins and Matt Berk swept in doubles for the Breakers in Thursday’s nonleague match on the road.

Kyle Herkins and Matthew Duong also swept in doubles for Laguna Beach (2-2), which lost all nine singles sets.

Laguna Beach hosts St. Margaret’s on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Ocean View 10, Katella 1: Freshman shortstop Haley Hoskin had four hits, including the first home run of her career, to lead the host Seahawks in a nonleague game on Thursday.

Ocean View (2-3) remains home to face University (1-2) next Thursday at 3:15 p.m.
