High school roundup: CdM boys’ volleyball starts strong in Orange County Championships

The Corona del Mar High boys’ volleyball team earned a pair of victories to kick off pool-play action in the Orange County Championships at Newport Harbor High on Friday.

The Sea Kings (8-2) began by beating Fountain Valley 25-9, 25-15 in a best-of-three match. Max Dunk had five kills in the sweep.

CdM, ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, followed with a 25-10, 25-18 win over San Diego Francis Parker. USC-bound outside hitter Brandon Browning had a team-high six kills.

Tyler Flood, Adam Flood and Kevin Kobrine each added four kills against the Lancers.

The Sea Kings, who advanced to the Gold Division playoff bracket, play their final pool-play match on Saturday against Lakewood at 10 a.m. The Gold Division playoffs will start afterward, with the top two teams from each of the four pools advancing to the quarterfinals at Edison High.

Newport Harbor 2, Woodbridge 0: The host Sailors defeated the Warriors 25-10, 25-15 in a pool-play match of the Orange County Championships on Friday.

Newport Harbor 2, Esperanza 0: The Sailors kept their perfect record intact with a 25-12, 25-14 pool-play win at home in the Orange County Championships on Friday.

Newport Harbor, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1, is 13-0 this season.

BASEBALL

Estancia 4, Godinez 1: Sophomore Jake Covey lasted five innings and improved to 3-0 in the Eagles’ Orange Coast League opener Friday.

Covey was two for two with two runs, while Hayden Pearce was one for three with a run batted in.

Nick Mazur picked up his second save after throwing two innings.

Estancia (6-3) plays rival Costa Mesa at Angel Stadium on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The league game will be the first in the Battle for the Bell series.

Costa Mesa 13, Saddleback 3: Junior Cameron Chapman finished four for five with five RBIs and two doubles for the visiting Mustangs in Friday’s Orange Coast League opener.

Costa Mesa (4-5 overall) jumped to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Miguel Rodriguez was three for four with three runs.

The Mustangs host South El Monte in a nonleague game on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Laguna Beach 3, Calvary Chapel 0: Senior starter Blake Burzell and relievers Eric Silva and Joe Sweet combined to throw a two-hit shutout for the Breakers at the start of Orange Coast League action at Vanguard University on Friday.

Burzell struck out three in five hitless innings, and Silva and Sweet each allowed a hit during their one inning of work.

Michael Kerner drove in two runs for Laguna Beach (5-4 overall), which travels to Saddleback on Tuesday for a league game at 3:30 p.m.

Sage Hill 14, Wilmington Harbor Teacher 2: Junior Trevor Klein finished three for three with four RBIs and a double for the Lightning in a nonleague home game on Friday.

Conner Hatz doubled twice and drove in two runs for Sage Hill (6-2).

Justin Camp got the win after striking out nine and giving up one earned run in four innings.

Sage Hill begins Academy League play at home against Crean Lutheran at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Rancho Alamitos 5, Los Amigos 2: Junior Elias Delgadillo produced half of the Lobos’ six hits in a Garden Grove League opener Friday.

Los Amigos (0-6 overall) plays a league game at Garden Grove on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Estancia 11, Bolsa Grande 0: The Eagles ran their winning streak to five consecutive games with the nonleague road victory on Friday.

Freshman Dylann Douglass had three hits, including a home run and a double, with three RBIs to lead Estancia (8-2).

Senior Emily Kubisty and freshman Lena De La O each drove in two runs.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Los Alamitos 109, Edison 61: The host Chargers lost the Sunset League dual meet opener Friday.

Edison swims at Marina on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Los Alamitos 132, Edison 38: The Chargers lost their Sunset League opener Friday at home.

Edison travels to Marina on Tuesday at 3 p.m., while Los Alamitos hosts defending league champion Fountain Valley.
