Costa Mesa girls’ volleyball tested, but sweeps Godinez

Courtney Moore had a team-high 14 kills and 23 digs, helping the Costa Mesa High girls’ volleyball team clinch at least a share of second place in the Orange Coast League with a 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 win at Godinez High on Wednesday.

Malia Tufuga added 11 kills and 17 assists for Costa Mesa, which also finished second in league last year. Ashley Nguyen chipped in with 15 assists and 11 digs.

The Mustangs (17-6, 7-2 in league) completed a stretch of three matches in three days that saw them take control of second place in the Orange Coast League. They earned a five-set win over Calvary Chapel on Monday and swept the Battle for the Bell against rival Estancia on Tuesday, allowing the Mustangs to clinch a CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoff berth for the second year in a row.

Costa Mesa has a one-match lead over Calvary Chapel for second place in league with one contest remaining. The Mustangs will host last-place Saddleback (11-13, 1-7) on Monday.
