The search for Jeff Brinkley’s successor has begun at Newport Harbor High.

Newport Harbor opened its head football coaching job on Tuesday, and those in or outside of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District can apply for the position, said principal Sean Boulton.

Boulton said Newport Harbor does not have a teaching job to go with the football coaching position. The new coach will take over for Brinkley, who retired last month after 32 years at the helm of the Sailors.

Brinkley went 244-130-3 overall with the Sailors, leading them to the CIF Southern Section championship game eight times, winning it three times, and six league titles. His 244 wins rank No. 5 all-time in Orange County.
