Newport Harbor field hockey headed back to TOC title game

The Newport Harbor High girls’ field hockey team will get to defend its Tournament of Champions title.

Chanse Hill scored the game-winning goal in the second half, leading the Sailors to a 1-0 win at rival Huntington Beach in the semifinals on Thursday.

Kate Davison had the assist for the Sailors, and goalkeeper Sarah Sheldon recorded eight saves in the shutout.

Newport Harbor (18-7-2) plays at Studio City Harvard-Westlake in the final on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Sailors lost 1-0 at Harvard-Westlake on Sept. 14.

Sailors coach Amanda Boyer highlighted the offensive play of Delaney Knipp and Maddie Vargas, and the defense of Chloe Bagiu and Sam Kerrigan.

“We’re really excited,” Boyer said via phone on Friday. “The girls definitely have the ability to rise to the occasion. It’s exciting to see the girls come into their potential in the [Tournament of Champions].”

Harvard-Westlake beat Glendora 4-0 in the semifinals. Huntington Beach will play Glendora for third place at Harvard-Westlake on Saturday at 3 p.m.
