Ocean View remains strong
There is a significant amount of turnover on the Ocean View High girls’ basketball team.
The Seahawks graduated seven seniors, all four captains, and four of five starters from the roster that made it to the CIF Southern Section Division 3A quarterfinals a year ago.

Seven different players got on the scoreboard for host Ocean View in its 41-21 victory over Garden Grove on Friday in an “Ultimate Flight Division” game of the Hawk Holiday Classic.
Emi Yamasaki did not score, but she found other ways to contribute by pulling down three rebounds and handing out three assists.
“That’s actually why we are who we are,” Morris said of the team-wide production. “It’s too easy to scout one particular player, so we make sure that we develop the rest of them so that they are able to contribute.”
Jackie Moss, the lone holdover from last year’s starting lineup, had nine points, seven steals, and five rebounds. She had a lot of help.
In her second year on varsity, Erica Almiranez looks prepared to give the Seahawks (4-1) a consistent spark. The junior had three three-pointers to fuel her 10-point game, adding seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Almiranez said that the Seahawks’ resiliency was key after suffering their first loss of the season in a tight, one-possession defeat against Oxford Academy (5-2) the night before.
“I felt like we were all really bummed out,” Almiranez said of the loss to the Patriots. “[The response] was good because I was frustrated by that game, but I was able to shake it off and say, ‘We have a new one tomorrow. We’re going to work hard, and we’re going to win.’”
Ocean View put the clamps on the Argonauts (4-3) when they entered the paint, limiting 6-foot-2 center Ve’a Gauta to three points for the game.
With her three blocks in the first quarter, Helen Reynolds played a big part in keeping Garden Grove out of rhythm offensively. The sophomore center said she was able to play aggressive because she could trust her weak-side defense.
“It wasn’t just me neutralizing,” Reynolds said. “It was me and Mellissa [Alani]. It was me and whoever had the help side. It was really good knowing that they were going to be behind us to help.”
The Seahawks held the Argonauts to three points in the first quarter and two in the fourth.
A three-pointer by Lexi Dellalonga tied the game, 16-16, on Garden Grove’s first possession of the second half.
Five points from Kelsie Newman off the bench helped Ocean View reestablish its lead in the third quarter, and the Seahawks won the final frame, 15-2, to close it out.
