The Fountain Valley High girls’ soccer team limited Ocean View to two shots on goal on Saturday afternoon.

Strong defense has been the Barons’ recipe for success early on this season.

Ocean View Winter Classic: In the Dec. 3 Sports section, an article on the Fountain Valley and Ocean View girls’ soccer match in the Ocean View Winter Classic misidentified the goalkeepers for both teams and how many saves Ocean View’s keeper made. Kianna Flores was Fountain Valley’s keeper, not Jasmine Rocha. Rocha was Ocean View’s keeper and she finished with seven saves, not four.

Fountain Valley recorded its second shutout in as many chances, beating host Ocean View 4-0 on the second day of the Ocean View Winter Classic.

While Fountain Valley’s offense could only score one goal in the first half, coming in the 26th minute by Samantha Escobar, the second half was a different story for the Barons (2-0).

Three minutes into the second half, Janelly Molina scored. The Barons, who attempted 21 shots, would put the game away in the 49th minute, as Chantelle Sanchez and Abby Edwards scored one minute apart.

“We had to keep working hard,” Sanchez said. “We knew they would keep going hard at us. We just had to keep pushing and pushing, and touching the ball. We had to be ready for the counterattacks. The few times they went forward, they all went forward. They were desperate for a goal. Right when they went forward, we got them back quick.”

Fountain Valley goalkeeper Kianna Flores recorded the shutout.

“I am really happy to see two clean sheets in our first two matches,” Fountain Valley coach Scott Goldman said. “We had a veteran back line last year. We only have one returning senior in the back line. It’s great to see our younger players, a couple of JV players that have moved up and really taken advantage of the opportunity.

“The biggest thing that we have been focused on defensively is denying shots and denying crosses, and not allowing teams to play. We are playing a little more of a pressure game while still being discipline.”

The Seahawks (1-1) would not attempt a shot until the second half when Madison White’s ball missed to the left of the goal.

Jasmine Rocha made seven saves for Ocean View.

“I think we played well,” said Ocean View assistant coach Thomas Sanchez, filling in for head coach Jose Sanchez, who missed the match because of a prior engagement. “Most of the problems were in the defense. However, I think the girls showed heart on the field. [Losing] 4-0 isn’t a fair result on how the game went, but we’ll live and learn.”

Both teams will meet again on Dec. 21 in a nonleague affair at Fountain Valley.
