Meah Collins of Costa Mesa, a recent Edison High graduate, placed fourth in the Women’s Pro Junior final Saturday afternoon at the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Collins, who won her semifinal heat earlier Saturday, totaled 9.17 in the final. Brisa Hennessy of Hawaii, 17, won the title with a total score of 15.00 while two-time defending champion Caroline Marks was second with a 13.73.

“I never really got a chance to get a good wave,” Collins said after the final. “I got that one big set left, it was just too bad it was into the pier. Yeah, it was OK, you know. I’m just glad I made the final.

“It’s always good to be in the final and just competing against your friends. Obviously, it’s competition, so you have your game face on. But it’s always nice to compete against friends and try your best.”

Hennessy said she was humbled to win the title.

“Women’s surfing in general is getting pushed harder and harder,” she said. “It means so much.”

Cody Young of Hawaii won the Men’s Pro Junior final.

In the Vans Pro men’s skateboarding final, Tom Schaar of Malibu took down the title with his top run of 91.69 points. It was the second event win of the season for Schaar.

Men’s and women’s surfing champions will be crowned Sunday at the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. The crowd should be with the local, Huntington Beach resident Kanoa Igarashi, who will compete in the men’s quarterfinals starting at 7:30 a.m. Get there early to see Igarashi in the quarterfinals, as he’s in Heat 1 against Ricardo Christie of New Zealand.

Other quarterfinal matchups include Josh Kerr of Australia against Filipe Toledo of Brazil, Carlos Munoz of Costa Rica against Michael February of South Africa and Patrick Gudauskas of San Clemente against Tomas Hermes of Brazil.

Men’s semifinals start at 10:30 a.m., with the final scheduled for 12:05 p.m.

Santa Ana’s Courtney Conlogue, a Sage Hill School alumna, will compete in the women’s surfing semifinals starting at 9:30 a.m. Conlogue is in the second semifinal, against Sage Erickson, with defending champion Tatiana Weston-Webb facing fellow Hawaiian Coco Ho in the first semifinal. The final is slated for 11:30 a.m.
