Around Town: Costa Mesa firefighters to host open house Saturday

The Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue Department will hold its annual open house Saturday as part of Fire Prevention Month.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire station at 2300 Placentia Ave. and will include a fire and rescue demonstration and various skills challenges for children and adults.

H.B. church to offer free flu shots

First Christian Church at 1207 Main St. in Huntington Beach will provide free flu shots from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The shots are available to people 9 and older, though parents must accompany minors.

Andersen Elementary to host fall festival

Andersen Elementary School will have a fall festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday on campus at 1900 Port Seabourne Way, Newport Beach.

The festival will feature food trucks, a disc jockey, a haunted house, a costume photo book and carnival games.

Realty firm presenting pumpkin patch

Torelli Realty’s annual pumpkin patch event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in the business’s parking lot at 1700 Adams Ave. in Costa Mesa.

Festivities will include free pumpkins, a pie-eating contest, a bounce house, a petting zoo, pony rides and concession stands.

H.B. library group to host mystery authors

Friends of the Huntington Beach Library will hold a $25 mystery authors luncheon at noon Oct. 21 at the Central Library, 7111 Talbert Ave.

Authors Ann Parker, J.C. De Ladurantey and Camille Minichino will be the featured speakers. Reservations are required by Monday.

O.C. fairgrounds holding art contest

The OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa is sponsoring its #DrainsToOcean public awareness art contest seeking to remind people that because storm drains lead directly to the ocean, all should think about what they dump down the drain.

Individuals or groups of up to four can submit family-friendly works that reflect the “drains to ocean” message.

The top six entrants will be invited to paint their designs on a storm drain cover at the fairgrounds in December. The winning design will receive a 2017 OC Fair Super Pass.

Designs must be submitted online at ocfair.com by 11:59 p.m. Nov. 4.
