A woman suspected of a hit-and-run was killed Thursday morning after her car crashed into a tree near downtown Huntington Beach, authorities said.

Police found the woman deceased in the front seat of a blue 2000 Nissan Maxima by Main Street and Palm Avenue about 1:32 a.m., according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.

She had lost control of the car as she was driving north on Main at a high speed and crashed into a tree, police said.

After further investigation, police said it appeared the woman hit the tree shortly after fleeing from a two-vehicle collision near Main and Orange Avenue, nearly a half-mile away.

No one was injured in the minor crash, police spokeswoman Jennifer Marlatt said.

Police did not know if alcohol played a role in either crash.

Police said the woman was 44 and from Ione, a small community southeast of Sacramento. Police did not release her name or other identifying information.

The investigation is continuing.
