Got used Lego blocks? Bring them to Art Walk in Laguna on Thursday
Guests at Thursday’s Art Walk in Laguna Beach can help an organization that donates Lego blocks to children in Africa by bringing the toys to the Chakra Shack.
Angelicque Pines, a painter who exhibits at the business at 976 S. Coast Hwy., said she was inspired reading the story of 11-year-old Micah Slentz and suggested Chakra Shack be a drop-off site for the toys.
Micah created Play Well Africa, a nonprofit that collects and distributes Lego blocks to donate to children in other countries who do not have any toys.
A few weeks ago Micah returned from a trip to Uganda where he and others distributed thousands of pounds of Lego blocks, along with providing food to students, Pines wrote in an email.
“We believe that fostering creativity and critical-thinking skills among children directly serves the goal of permanent improvements to quality of life in Africa,” according to Play Well Africa’s website.
Sisters Alicia, 11, and Anabelle Serratos, 9, will be selling jewelry, such as necklaces and earrings, and ornaments they made out of Lego blocks.
Alicia and Micah attended the same school through third grade, said Monica Serratos, Alicia’s mom.
Alicia came home one day, asking how she could help Micah’s cause and be able to go on a trip to Uganda to distribute Legos, Serratos said.
“We told her if she wanted to do it, she had to raise money,” Serratos said.
The girls, who live in Lake Forest, created their own organization, Play Well Jewelry and accompanied Micah on the trip to Uganda last month to distribute Lego blocks.
Art Walk runs from 6 to 9 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month.
