Search suspended for missing swimmer near Huntington Beach Pier

Share

After 11 hours of scouring the ocean near the Huntington Beach Pier, authorities Wednesday suspended their search for an 18-year-old swimmer who was reported missing the night before.

The Coast Guard launched its search for the woman, identified by authorities as Jessy Cook, after receiving a call from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

Authorities were told the woman was on the pier and then somehow ended up in the water before a witness lost sight of her, Coast Guard Lt. Daniel Ippolito said. It wasn’t clear whether she jumped or fell from the pier.

Some of her personal items were left on the pier, Ippolito said.

Boats were used to search the area overnight, and a helicopter joined in Wednesday morning, said Coast Guard Petty Officer DaVonte Marrow.

The Coast Guard suspended the effort at 10:30 a.m. after searching nearly 137 square nautical miles. Crews also searched the beach on the chance that Cook went ashore, Ippolito said. She was not found, Marrow said.

Authorities described Cook as 5 feet 11 inches tall and 147 pounds with brown hair. She was wearing a light-colored top.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach command center at (310) 521-3801.
