A man who police suspect is linked to a series of crimes in Newport Beach was arrested Friday morning in Corona del Mar, police said.

Officers received several reports Friday morning of a suspicious person in the 2600 block of Bungalow Place, police said. One caller said a man had approached a home under construction and opened a trash bin on the property. Other callers said the man was peering into neighbors’ windows, according to police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.

At about 7:30 a.m., officers found a man in possession of wire cutters and under the influence of methamphetamine, Manzella said in a news release.

Cannon Timothy Torres, 22, of Aliso Viejo was arrested on an outstanding warrant and on suspicion of a narcotics violation, Manzella said. He was booked into Orange County Jail.

Police received several calls that day from residents who said they had been burglarized. A power tool reportedly was stolen from a garage on White Sails Way. Authorities said the tool later was found in the trash bin on Bungalow Place.

Several items were reported stolen from three unlocked cars along Setting Sun Drive and Sandpoint Way. Some of the items were found with Torres when he was arrested, Manzella said.

Several other thefts were reported close to where Torres was arrested, Manzella said. A 2012 Honda CR-V reported stolen from a house on Sandpoint Way was found outside a nearby elementary school, Manzella said. The same school reported that its music room had been burglarized, she said.

Miscellaneous property, including two car keys, was found on Pebble Drive and White Sails Way. A bicycle reported stolen from a garage in the 2500 block of Bungalow Place was found a block away, police said.

Two handguns and narcotics paraphernalia were found Saturday morning at the intersection of Harbor View Drive and Marguerite Avenue, police said. Officers determined the firearms were stolen in an unreported burglary on Pebble Drive.

“The Newport Beach Police Department extends our gratitude to each citizen who contacted our dispatch center to report this suspicious activity,” Manzella said in the news release. “Thanks to that timely information, officers were able to locate and arrest Torres without incident.”

Police suspect other unreported crimes might have taken place before Torres was arrested. They asked that people who think they were victims of a crime or have found abandoned property in their neighborhood contact Detective Brian Schlottach at (949) 644-3799 or bschlottach@nbpd.org.
