A 42-year-old man was arrested Sunday at a Costa Mesa motel in connection with a Fountain Valley home invasion robbery the day before in which a resident was assaulted and tied up, police said.

Fountain Valley police responded to a report of the robbery in the 11000 block of Sandstone Avenue at 1:54 p.m. Saturday. The resident, a 62-year-old man, told officers that he heard knocking and when he opened the front door a man forced his way into the home, police said.

Police said the man threatened to kill the resident and assaulted him before fleeing with property taken from the home.

The victim suffered a small laceration on his lip but declined medical attention, police said.

Investigating officers determined that the robber may have been involved in two earlier home invasions in Westminster.

Westminster police identified a suspect as Danh Dao of Fountain Valley.

The victim in the Fountain Valley robbery identified him as the man who entered his home, police said.

Officers saw Dao’s Mazda 3 hatchback parked at a Motel 6 in Costa Mesa and watched the car, police said.

Dao was arrested Sunday as he was leaving a room at the motel, police said.

He was booked into Orange County Jail in Santa Ana on suspicion of robbery and assault. Bail was set at more than $1 million, according to jail records.

Fountain Valley and Westminster police are continuing to investigate the robberies. Anyone with information about the cases is asked to call (714) 593-4485.
