2 seriously injured in Newport Beach crashes

Two people were seriously injured in Newport Beach crashes Thursday night and Friday morning, authorities said.

A pedestrian was struck Thursday night by a fire hydrant that was sheared off by a vehicle.

The incident was reported at about 10 p.m. in the 800 block of Coast Highway, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital with a leg injury, authorities said.

In a separate incident, a motorist was seriously injured when her 2007 Honda Civic hit a light pole shortly after 12:30 a.m. Friday at Jamboree and Ford roads. The driver was taken to a hospital, according to Sgt. Eric Little of the Newport Beach Police Department.

Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor in the crash, said Jennifer Manzella, spokeswoman for Newport Beach police. The cause is under investigation.
