Mesa Water District suggests once-a-week watering

The Mesa Water District is recommending that its customers limit outdoor watering to one day a week this month and next.

“Now is the perfect time to switch to a once-a-week watering schedule for your lawn, shrubs and trees,” Justin Finch, resource efficiency specialist for Mesa Water, said in a statement Wednesday. “With shorter days and cooler nights, significantly less water is needed to sustain healthy outdoor landscapes.”

In June, Mesa Water — which provides service to about 110,000 people in Costa Mesa, parts of Newport Beach and sections of unincorporated Orange County, including John Wayne Airport — stopped restricting the days customers can water outside.

From June through October, Mesa Water saw cumulative water savings of 9.8% compared with those months in 2013, according to figures from the state.

“Our customers continue to conserve through increased awareness and changed behavior,” Finch said. “Now we encourage everyone to pick one day of the week to water and commit to it.”

Mesa Water released a suggested watering schedule that can be viewed at mesawater.org/waterschedule.
