Antaeus Theatre Co. has big plans for new downtown Glendale location

The venue where the Antaeus Theatre Co. will move in downtown Glendale is under construction, and the theater troupe is expected to debut its first production there sometime this fall.

A storefront at 110 E. Broadway is being renovated to make way for the new site, which will house an 80-seat theater and a smaller 45-seat “black box” theater for smaller productions.

There will also be a lobby gallery, a classics library and theatrical classes in the future.

The first production will be a rendition of Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1955.

“We felt like this production will really showcase the actors in the company,” said Bill Brochtrup, co-artistic director of Antaeus, which is currently based in North Hollywood.

“It’s a way to look at a play some people may know in a fresh new light, which is what we take pride in doing,” he said.

Antaeus is made up of more than 180 classically trained actors who frequently work in film, television and stage productions.

There will likely be about three plays produced a year that will typically be written by classic playwrights with works through the 20th century, Brochtrup said.

The smaller venue will have seats that can be moved around to allow for different configurations, he added.

Brochtrup said he looks forward to adding to the arts’ presence in downtown Glendale and that the Antaeus already has a good working relationship with the city’s oldest venue — the historic Alex Theatre.

Antaeus actors have already been allowed to rehearse in the Alex’s forecourt, he said.

Bringing the Antaeus into the downtown mix with the Alex and other places, such as the Museum of Neon Art, is part of an ongoing goal to make Glendale an 18-hour city, where people work and play, said Darlene Sanchez, the city’s deputy director of economic development.

“[The Antaeus] is really part of the next phase of the Arts and Entertainment District we’re creating,” she said.
