Women’s advocate Joyce Catherine Morrissey dies at 84

Joyce Catherine Morrissey, who lived in Glendale for about 40 years and was active in several area organizations, passed away on Nov. 6. She was 84 years old.

Morrissey was past state president and founder fellow of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women, past board member and lifetime member of the Los Angeles Girl Scout Council and past board member of the Downtown Women’s Center.

In 1989, she was honored as Woman of the Year by the Commission on the Status of Women of Los Angeles County. Also, she was a member of Uni-Fem, UNA, on the board of the Friends of Glendale Public Library and the first female president of the board at First Congregational Church in Los Angeles.

A longtime insurance broker with Cass & Johansing, she was the oldest licensed female insurance broker in California, with a career spanning more than 50 years.

Morrissey is survived by her brother, John Morrissey.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec.3 at Shatto Chapel of First Congregational Church, 540 S. Commonwealth Ave., Los Angeles.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity supporting women’s issues is encouraged.
