Three Stooges film event coming to Alex Theatre in Glendale

Share

The Alex Film Society is giving Glendale families a chance to step away from the playful eye pokes and mock face slaps at the Thanksgiving table and instead, a few days later, watch the pros go at it during the 19th annual Three Stooges big-screen event.

The Alex Theatre will present five movie shorts starring the slapstick trio of Moe, Larry and Curly on 35-mm film print on Saturday. The event will also include an appearance by various relatives of the Three Stooges actors and other special guests related to the film’s production.

A raffle for a vintage Stooges jacket and other prizes will also be part of the event.

Randy Carter, one of the founders of the film society and a member of the committee that decided which Stooges films will be featured, said the event is one of the group’s most successful.

“Seeing them on the big screen is vastly different than seeing them on television,” Carter said. “Seeing them with 1,000 people laughing is really ‘wow,’ and the sound effects — when they hit each other with a pipe, it’s a great difference.”

Since the Alex Film Society has 190 Stooges shorts from which to choose, Carter said selection can be difficult. Years ago, the group decided to organize the event by theme, and this Saturday’s showing is titled “The Affordable Curly Care Act,” a play on the health care industry. One year, there was a western theme titled “Stoogecoach.”

Here is the official film lineup: “From Nurse to Worse,” “Cash & Carry,” “Some More Samoa,” “Scrambled Brains” and “All the World’s a Stooge.”

“Fortunately for us, there are a lot of really good medical-themed shorts,” Carter said.

The Alex Theatre is located at 216 N. Brand Blvd. in downtown Glendale. Show times will be at 2 and 8 p.m.
