A 58-year-old La Habra man who was shot after reportedly rushing toward a Glendale police officer while holding a knife was charged on Monday in the alleged assault, officials said.

Jose Jesus Limon was charged with one count each of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, possession of a dirk or dagger and possession of cocaine, according to the Los Angeles County Superior Court criminal complaint.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges on Tuesday.

Just before 3 a.m. Friday morning, Limon was stopped by a Glendale police officer who reportedly saw him jaywalking at Colorado Street and Glendale Avenue, said Glendale Police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot.

During the stop, Limon allegedly charged the officer — who had parked his patrol car and was on foot — while aggressively brandishing a knife, Lightfoot said.

The officer — identified in the criminal complaint as Alexis Kang — subsequently fired one round toward Limon, striking him in the side of his abdomen, Lightfoot said.

Limon was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Kang was not injured.

Limon was medically cleared early Saturday morning and booked into jail.

He is being held in lieu of $70,000 bail and is due back in court next month.

The investigation remains ongoing.
