Longtime Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich came out on top in the race for the seat for the 25th District state Senate Tuesday night.

Antonovich, the lone Republican in the bid, received 57,749 votes, or roughly 39%, according to election results.

Coming in second was former Democratic Assemblyman Anthony Portantino with 40,901 votes, or about 28%.

Antonovich and Portantino will face-off against each other in the general election in November as they vie for the seat.

Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) had been in the race, but opted to drop out in December.

For the last 35 years, Antonovich has held the seat for the county’s 5th District, but term limits approved by voters in 2002 freed up the position for the first time since 1980.

Prior to serving on the county board, Antonovich was elected to the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees and the California State Assembly, where he served three terms.

Portantino served as an Assembly member for the 44th District from 2006 to 2012. He is known for authoring AB 144, which made it illegal to open-carry an unloaded firearm in public.

Portantino is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Southern California, where he has taught leadership.
