Police helicopter helps track down suspected burglar

Police on Thursday caught a 35-year-old man armed with an iron bar who scared a Glendale woman out of her home before attempting to flee from officers, authorities said.

At around 11 a.m., William Kingsland, of Glendale, reportedly sneaked into a house in the 3300 block of Vickers Drive through a backyard sliding door, where he encountered the resident, telling her not to worry and that he wouldn’t do anything to her, said Glendale Police Sgt. Robert William.

The woman fled out her front door and ran to a neighbor’s home where she called 911.

Patrol officers quickly set up a perimeter in the area, and in less than 10 minutes, the Pasadena police helicopter spotted the suspect just beyond the perimeter, jumping from yard to yard, William said.

As it circled over Kingsland, the helicopter directed officers on the ground through several yards, ultimately leading them to the backyard of a home in the 3400 block of Sierra Glen Road.

There, Kingsland was surrounded and taken into custody on suspicion of burglary.

At around the same time, another home burglary was reported nearby in the 3400 block of Hidden Rancho Lane, though nothing was stolen.

It was not immediately clear if the two incidents were related.
