On Campus at GCC: Summer registration to continue through June 17

Registration for summer session continues

The summer session at Glendale Community College will begin June 20. Open registration will continue through June 17. The fall class schedule is now online at glendale.edu/schedules. Fall classes will begin Aug. 29. Priority registration will begin on Monday, and open registration will begin June 6. For detailed course descriptions, go to glendale.edu/publications.

Science lecture series explores community engineering

Glendale Community College’s Science Lecture Series’ final spring presentation, titled “Help Rebuild Our Community and World: Careers in Engineering,” will be held at 12:30 p.m. on May 24 in room 177 of the Cimmarusti Science Center.

The speakers will be Scott Dellinger, vice president at engineering design firm AECOM and an adjunct professor at Cal State L.A. in the civil engineering department, and Kanan Patel-Coleman, environmental risk-assessment manager with AECOM. They will discuss career paths available within an engineering company and what young engineers should focus on for personal and career development.

There will be emphasis on two civil engineering specialties — water resources and environmental — and how they improve communities. Admission is free. The college is located at 1500 N. Verdugo Road.

Groups hold vocal and orchestra concerts

Members of the college choir, chamber singers and opera workshop will present a concert featuring choral works and opera excerpts led by directors Tobin Sparfeld and Anita Protich at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the college’s auditorium. Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors.

On May 19, a concert by the Glendale Community College chamber jazz group will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium led by musical directors Chris Coulter and Chris Rios. General admission tickets are $10 and $7 for students and seniors.

On May 22, the Glendale College Community Orchestra will perform in the college’s auditorium at 3 p.m. led by conductor Beth Pflueger. It is a full orchestra with woodwind, brass, percussion and string sections. The orchestra will be performing Poulenc’s “Gloria” with the college’s concert singers, Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man”, “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” by Debussy and Ravel’s “Bolero.”

Admission is $10 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors. Tickets are available online at glendalearts.org or at the door.

Pflueger is also coordinator of the applied music program, which features some of the best student musicians at the college. There will be a recital by instrumentalists and vocalists in the program at 7:30 p.m. on May 20 in the auditorium. Admission is free.

On May 21, the Glendale Community College’s vocal jazz ensemble and jazz guitar ensemble will perform instrumental and vocal arrangements of jazz and popular music under the direction of Clare and Byron Delto at 7:30 p.m. in the college’s auditorium. Admission is $10 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors.

More concerts and recitals will be held in June. Information about the music department performances are available by calling (818) 240-1000, Ext. 3057, or by visiting glendale.edu/music. The college’s box office opens one hour before each performance.

Annual dance performance opens this month

The annual Glendale Community College dance performances will be presented May 24 through 29 in the dance theater in the Sierra Nevada Gym. They will feature choreography and performances by students in dance-production classes, with Dora Krannig and Lynn McMurrey directing.

Shows will be at 8 p.m. on May 24 through 28. The final show will be at 2 p.m. on May 29. Admission is free. No children under 5 years old will be admitted. Seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. Early arrival is strongly advised.
