Midyear report shows rise in property, violent crime in Glendale

The number of violent and property crimes reported in Glendale, when combined, jumped 7% through June of this year when compared to the same period last year, according to a midyear crime report released by the Glendale Police Department.

Violent crime, which includes homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, jumped 20%, from 96 incidents reported through June of last year to 115 during the same period this year.

Driving much of the jump was an increase in reported rapes — six rapes were reported through June of last year, while police logged 18 during the first half of this year.

The number of homicides, meanwhile, dropped from three through June of last year to one so far this year.

In the early morning hours of June 25, a 25-year-old man was fatally shot after a party in a Glendale neighborhood. Two Northern California men have been charged in his death.

Property crime, which includes burglary, theft and arson, jumped 6%, from 1,698 incidents reported during the first half of last year to 1,797 through June of this year.

Police logged a 23% risein burglaries — including car, home and business break-ins — which jumped to 548 through June of this year, up from 447 during the same period last year.

Calls for service increased 10%, with police responding to 26,628 calls through June of this year, compared to 24,177 during the same period last year. Meanwhile, officer-initiated activity dropped 15%, from 38,594 incidents last year to 32,851 through June of this year.

Glendale police logged four traffic fatalities through June of this year, up from two through June of last year. Even so, the total number of pedestrian-related collisions has dropped 42%, from 73 collisions through June of last year to 42 during the same period this year.

According to the statistics, police handed out fewer traffic and parking citations during the first half of this year when compared to the same period last year. Officials have given 32,369 parking tickets and 7,622 traffic tickets through June of this year, compared to 34,150 parking tickets and 8,489 traffic tickets during the same period last year.
