A workshop that begins next week at Glendale Community College will have renowned British orchestra conductor Neil Thomson mentor other conductors during a five-day event that will end with a concert in Arcadia.

The workshop, which begins Monday and ends on July 30, is a partnership between the Los Angeles Conducting Institute and Glendale Community College’s music department.

The 20 conductors will initially work with a string quartet then finish the week with a full orchestra, said Peter Green, a music professor at Glendale Community College, where he chairs the visual and performing arts division.

“I look forward to this truly inspirational event,” he said in an email.

Thomson has served as head of the conducting program at London’s Royal College of Music and is a well-regarded mentor.

Among the orchestras he’s conducted are the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra.

During the upcoming workshop, professional musicians will focus on Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 3,” Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 4” and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5.”

The end of the workshop will be marked with a concert that will begin at 7:30 p.m. on July 30 at Church of the Good Shepherd, 400 W. Duarte Road in Arcadia.

The cost to attend the concert is $25 for general admission and $20 for seniors and students.
