East Coast burger chain Shake Shack announced this week it will open its second Southland location in downtown Glendale by the end of next year.

The New York-based fast-casual chain that’s surged in popularity in recent years will be moving into Caruso Affiliated’s latest project — a commercial building next to the Masonic Temple on Brand Boulevard.

The project has yet to be built — city officials approved plans for it this fall — but the developer said the burger spot will move in by the end of 2016.

Shake Shack is the first of six tenants that are expected to occupy the storefront retail project.

The eatery, known for its Angus beef burgers and crinkle-cut fries, will be located just blocks from In-N-Out, which many locals consider Glendale’s signature burger joint.

The new building will be at the corner of Brand and Colorado Street on a vacant lot that in the past has been used for selling Christmas trees and pumpkins for Halloween.

It’s surrounded by other Caruso Affiliated projects like the Masonic Temple — which was built in the 1920s and is being renovated into office space that’s set to open in early January — and the Americana at Brand, which is right across the street.

Additional tenants will be announced in the coming months, said Julie Jauregui, senior general manager of the Americana.

“The tenants will include both unique retailers and restaurants to complement the Masonic Temple and the other first-class restaurants on Brand Boulevard, including Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak and Din Tai Fung,” she said in an email, referring to two restaurants in the America at Brand.
