Glendale PTA: GUSD calendar committee to meet at Glendale High

A meeting of Glendale Unified’s calendar committee will be held at 6:30 p.m. today in the auditorium at Glendale High School.

This is an opportunity for attendees to provide input on the start dates of future instructional calendars beginning with the 2017-18 school year.

There will be another community meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the auditorium at Crescenta Valley High School.

Community input may also be submitted through an online survey available through next Wednesday at gusd.net.

Do you know the difference between depression and sadness? Learn more during a free parent workshop hosted by the school district’s student support services department at 6 p.m. on March 9 at the Library Connection at Adams Square, 1100 E. Chevy Chase Drive.

Negative or stressful events, such as the death of a loved one or loss of employment, can trigger depression. If you or someone you know has symptoms, it is important to take action now. Seating is limited. Call (818) 548-3833 to preregister.

Glendale High School

A free meeting on the subject of “Helping Your Child Navigate the Path to College” will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on April 4 at the school. It will be hosted by the Glendale High School PTSA and College Fit 360.

Information presented will be particularly important for juniors. However, there will be essential information for ninth- and 10th-graders, too.

College Fit 360 is an educational consulting firm specializing in guiding students and families through the college application process. Topics will include how parents can help their child prepare for college during each year of high school, what today’s college application process looks like and why it’s important to find the right college for your child.

Glendale High’s Scholastic Bowl will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 29 in the John Wayne Performing Arts Center.

Oratorical, Glendale High’s longest running annual tradition, will be held on Feb. 26. Each of the school’s four classes participate in four components, which include an original speech, a tableau carrying out the theme of the speech, discipline of the class and class spirit.

The Glendale High PTSA will meet at 6 p.m. on March 7 in the school library.

Wilson Middle School

A free parent and student workshop, hosted by the Wilson PTSA, will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23 on the topic of “Anger Management Strategies.”

A Wilson PTSA board meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 1 in the school library.

Elections for key PTSA volunteer positions will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 15 in the school library.

The next “Coffee with the Principal” will be held at 8:30 a.m. on March 8 in the school library. This will be followed by a free parent workshop at 9 a.m. An evening version of the same free workshop for both parents and Wilson students will be held later at 7 p.m.

John Marshall Elementary School

Marshall’s PTA will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The PTA’s spring fundraiser will kick off on Feb. 26.

The school’s Dr. Seuss Assembly and Reading Day will be held on March 4.

“Marshall’s Got Talent,” the school’s annual talent showcase, will begin at 5 p.m. on March 15 in the school’s auditorium.

R.D. White Elementary School

R.D. White’s PTA will host its Founder’s Day Tea at 3 p.m. on Feb. 25.

Staying healthy can be fun and what better way to show it than at the school’s jog-a-thon on March 11.

Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School

The PTA board will meet at 6:30 p.m. on March 3. A meeting of Woodlanders Are Volunteers for Education, known as WAVE, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 15.

The school’s annual Survivor Challenge, among the students’ favorite events, will take place on March 4. The event will challenge students to run, jump and test their physical skills in a variety of ways. According to co-chair Cat Paulk, the event will run from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and helps to raise funds for important staff positions at the school.
