It’s unlikely the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy basketball team will catch Marymount for the Sunshine League championship.

But, the Tologs will be plenty pleased if they can take second place and enter the CIF playoffs with some momentum.

Flintridge Sacred Heart took a big step toward wrapping up second place Thursday night, as Jenna Tran finished with 21 points and Camilla Homans added 14 points and nine rebounds to help the host Tologs register a 58-45 win against Louisville.

Flintridge Sacred Heart (18-7, 5-2 in league) swept the two-game season series with Louisville (17-7, 3-3). The Tologs lost both games against Marymount (5-0 in league entering its game against Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Thursday) and have one league game remaining against host Immaculate Heart on Tuesday. Third-place Louisville has two league games left.

“We just like the way we are playing right now,” said Flintridge Sacred Heart Coach Ty Buxman, whose team is ranked eighth in Division IV-AA. “I think we are where we want to be.

“We’ve been playing very good defense and our offense has been getting better. We’ll play it out and see what will happen.”

Tran, a reigning all-league pick, paved the way for the Tologs. She registered 10 points in the first quarter to help the Tologs build a 12-7 lead.

Tran, a senior, finished with three three-pointers, including one that gave the Tologs an 8-0 lead with 3:50 left in the first quarter.

“I made some shots in the first quarter and I got some confidence,” Tran said. “We got out to the big lead early and we played good defense the whole game.

“We had some turnovers tonight, but I feel like we are playing some of our best basketball right now. We’re passing the ball and rebounding and we are getting contributions from everybody.”

Homans provided the Tologs with a boost against the Royals, ranked seventh in Division IV-A. Homans finished with 10 second-half points to help Flintridge Sacred Heart, which recorded a 62-57 overtime win against Louisville on Jan. 14, prevail.

The Tologs held a 26-17 halftime advantage.

Homans scored on a layup to give Flintridge Sacred Heart a 30-18 lead with 6:02 left in the third quarter. Kelly Fradet connected on a three-pointer from the left side to extend the Tologs’ advantage to 38-20 with 4:26 to go in the quarter.

“We were able to mostly control the boards throughout the first half and into the second half,” said Buxman, who led the Tologs to a playoff appearance last season. “We are a better team when we can rebound well.”

Fradet finished with nine points and three steals for Flintridge Sacred Heart, which also got three steals from Tran.

Louisville got 19 points and four steals from Taylor Weiner.
