Following a regular season that featured 19 matches and resulted in an overall winning record, the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy soccer team will wait to see if its body of work will land it a spot in the CIF playoffs.

Flintridge Sacred Heart wrapped up the regular season Wednesday with a 1-0 Mission League home loss against rival Harvard-Westlake at Occidental College.

The Tologs dipped to 10-6-3, 2-5-1 in league for seven points and fourth place, trailing league champion Harvard-Westlake, second-place Chaminade and Notre Dame. The top three teams from the five-team league automatically qualify for the postseason. The CIF Southern Section office will unveil its postseason pairings for all seven division Monday. The Tologs are seeking an at-large berth in Division I.

“I think we have a shot at making the playoffs,” first-year Flintridge Sacred Heart Coach Mark Snashall said. “Hopefully we will be there after playing in a tough league.

“We had a winning record and it’s not like we were blown out in a lot of our league games. We’ll see what happens.”

Harvard-Westlake(15-4-3, 7-0-1 for 22 points) wrapped up the league championship after beating Flintridge Sacred Heart for the second time this season. The Wolverines, who captured the league crown last season ahead of the second-place Tologs, recorded a 4-1 home win against Flintridge Sacred Heart on Jan. 22.

“We definitely played much better today,” Flintridge Sacred Heart’s Sofia Saldivar said. “We had some chances [in the first half] and just couldn’t finish.

“If we make the playoffs, then I think there are a lot of things we can take away from this game and have it help us. We saw a lot of good teams throughout the season and especially in league and we can take things from playing those games.”

On Wednesday, Harvard-Westlake received a goal from Courtney Gazmarian about five minutes into the second half before holding Flintridge Sacred Heart at bay.

With the ball loose inside the box, Gazmarian got to the ball and beat Flintridge Sacred Heart goalkeeper Mattie Interian with a low shot.

Flintridge Sacred Heart had several golden scoring opportunities late in the first half.

Saldivar rolled a shot from the right side just wide of the left post in the 35th minute. Harvard-Westlake goalkeeper Lindsay Avant then made a diving save on a shot inside the box by Nia Harris in the 37th minute. About two minutes later, Avant batted a direct kick by Amethyst Trang just over the crossbar.

“It’s been our Achilles heel all season,” Snashall said. “We just seem to have trouble scoring goals at certain times.”
