Davis not as visible in second game

A week after being repeatedly targeted by opposing quarterbacks, Glendale High product Michael Davis had a significantly more low-key effort with the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

The rookie corner back finished with one tackle and one assist in Los Angeles’ 13-7 defeat to the New Orleans Saints in Carson in the second game of preseason action and Davis’ second career game.

Davis saw action on defense and special teams and was part of a defense looking for redemption after the Chargers were hammered at home, 48-17, by the Seattle Seahawks in the preseason opener Aug. 13.

In that game, Davis finished tied for third on his squad with five tackles, but surrendered multiple big plays to Seattle’s first- and second-string quarterbacks.

Los Angeles is back in action Saturday in a “road” game at the Los Angeles Coliseum versus the Los Angeles Rams. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game will be televised on CBS.

Another no-decision for Estrada

Former Glendale Community College and current Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marco Estrada pitched well Sunday against the Chicago Cubs, but came away with a no-decision.

Alex Avila belted a two-run walk-off single with one out in the 10th inning to power the Cubs to a 6-5 victory over the visiting Blue Jays.

Estrada, 34, a right-handed starter, thew six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out four and walking one.

Estrada has eight no-decisions in his last 12 starts. In his last 15 starts, he has one victory, which was Aug. 10 against the New Your Yankees.

On the season, Estrada is 5-8 with a 5.07 earned-run average over 145 2/3 innings. In addition, he has given up 82 runs (all earned) and 149 hits while striking out 147 and walking 61.
