Glendale Community College Women’s Golf Preview: Vaqueros in search of additional talent

Derrick Williams could certainly use a few more athletes for a full lineup for the Glendale Community College women’s golf team.

Williams has only two players in the mix and he’s doing everything possible to find additional talent.

“We’re doing our best to recruit some more players, but it’s been hard,” said Williams, who had just two players last season. “We’re looking for people who want to go here and get a good education.

“We’re trying our best and we hope to bring in a few more people so we can have a team that will be competing in an excellent conference.”

The Vaqueros have brought in freshmen Ani Gharapetian (Crescenta Valley High) and Jazmin Infante.

“Ani has got high school experience and we’ve been working more on her swing,” said Williams, who took over for Natalie Guidry last season after serving for one year as Guidry’s assistant. “Jazmin has a lot of potential and she can hit the ball pretty far.”

Williams, who graduated from Michigan State in 2011, is the program’s fourth coach. Williams, who is an instructor at Scholl Canyon Golf Course, is also the La Cañada High boys’ and girls’ golf coach. He was named the All-Area Boys’ Golf Coach of the Year after leading La Cañada to the Rio Hondo League championship in the spring.

Glendale will start its season Aug. 27 in the South Coast Tournament and then take part in a Western State Conference match Aug. 28 at Buenaventura Golf Course in Ventura.

Glendale, which last qualified for the playoffs in 2012, will participate in seven conference matches. The Vaqueros will host a conference match Oct. 16 at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

The conference includes traditional powerhouses Santa Barbara and College of the Canyons. Santa Barbara won the conference and Southern California Regional title and finished runner-up to Sierra in the state championship last season.

The conference finals will take place Oct. 29-30 at a site to be determined. The Southern California finals will be held Nov. 5-6 and the state tournament will occur Nov. 12-13 at Morro Bay Golf Course.
