Shaheen looks for one last big weekend

Crescenta Valley High sophomore Katelynn Shaheen enjoyed plenty of success at the CIF Southern Section Division II Diving Championships at Riverside City College on May 8.

Shaheen became her school’s first diving champion since 1998 by capturing the title with 478.45 points.

Now Shaheen will look for more glory as she has accepted a bid to the CIF State Diving Championships on Friday at West Clovis High.

Shaheen is seeded sixth out of 28 competitors and will get going at 8:30 a.m.

Shaheen is the only local competitor at the swimming or diving championships.

Estrada continues early season success

Former Glendale Community College and current Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marco Estrada continues to impress in the early going of the 2017 season.

Estrada, a right-hander, turned in another quality outing Thursday in a home game against the Seattle Mariners. Estrada allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings to help the Blue Jays earn a 7-2 victory. He allowed two runs in the first before quickly settling down.

“That first inning gives me a little grief at times,” Estrada told MLB.com. “I don’t know what happens, all of a sudden I just kind of turn things around. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t, and today was just one of those days, but the guys put up a lot of runs for me and it’s nice to go out there and pitch with a big lead.”

Estrada has surrendered two runs or fewer in six of his eight starts this season and has gone at least six innings in all but one of his outings.

In eight starts, Estrada has a 2-2 record with a 3.12 earned-run average over 49 innings. He has allowed 42 hits, 17 runs and struck out a team-best 53 while walking 15.

Bergman takes loss in first start

Making his first starting appearance with the Seatle Mariners, former St. Francis High standout Christian Bergman suffered a 4-0 road loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.

The former All-Area Baseball Player of the Year went five innings. The right-hander allowed three runs (all earned) on seven hits and struck out one in a 66-pitch effort.

The leadoff batter reached base in four of five innings worked by Bergman, who previously played for the Colorado Rockies before joining Seattle in the offseason.

“It’s tough when the leadoff guy is getting on every inning,” Bergman told the Seattle Times. “It was a difficult part of my night. I did the best I could to minimize the damage. But it was an uphill battle most of the night. The command was a little bit off.”

Bergman, 29, has a 4.15 earned-run average.
