Glendale’s Davis takes his licks in opener

It was a rough NFL debut for Glendale High defensive back Michael Davis. The former All-Area player logged his first professional action with the Los Angeles Chargers in the team’s preseason opener Sunday at StubHub Center in Carson.

The rookie tied for third on the Chargers with five tackles, but was repeatedly picked on by Seattle quarterbacks in the Seahawks’ 48-17 victory.

According to the Los Angeles Times’ Mike DiGiovanna, Davis surrendered several big plays consisting of five receptions for 18 or more yards.

Davis and the Chargers will look for redemption Sunday versus the New Orleans Saints at Stubhub at 5 p.m. in the second of four preseason games.

Estrada suffers loss to Tampa Bay

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Marco Estrada, a former Glendale Community College player, fell short in winning a second straight appearance.

Estrada, who ended a 12-game winless skid in his previous outing, yielded six runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings in a 6-4 loss against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.

Estrada has had difficulty against Tampa Bay this season. The right-hander is 0-4 with a 10.61 earned-run average in four starts versus Tampa Bay. He dipped to 1-8 with a 4.96 ERA in 14 career games against the Rays.

“Just one of those teams that has my number,” Estrada told the Associated Press. “I haven’t been able to figure them out.”

Estrada is 5-8 with a 5.09 ERA in 25 starts. He’s struck out 143 and walked 60 in 139 2/3 innings.
