Doyle picks Crescenta Valley football up against Burroughs

BURBANK — With a rash of injuries and down to its third-string running back, Crescenta Valley High’s running game was depleted against Burroughs.

But the Falcons’ ground attack received a boost Friday night in the form of quarterback Cole Doyle.

The junior rushed for 161 yards in 15 carries and scored two touchdowns to pave the way for a 38-14 Pacific League victory against the Indians at Memorial Field.

“It’s really different every week, but I just do what is asked of me for us to get the win,” said Doyle, who had scoring runs of nine and 20 yards. “Sometimes the run is there and sometimes the pass is there, so I just have to take what they give me. Tonight the run was just clicking for me so we just stuck to that.

“We have some guys who are injured and we had a lot of guys who stepped up and helped us win tonight.”

The win keeps Crescenta Valley (7-0, 4-0 in league) — ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division VI — as one of just two undefeated teams in the Pacific League. The other is Burbank (4-0 in league). The Falcons and Bulldogs will clash Friday at Moyse Field.

Burroughs (3-3, 2-2) kept things even with the Falcons through one quarter. The Indians scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Piper to Cerain Baker with 24 seconds left in the first to tie the score at 7.

But then the Indians offense went stale. Crescenta Valley scored 31 unanswered points and Burroughs didn’t get back into the end zone until the 3:18 mark of the fourth quarter on a one-yard run from Hakeem Hickman.

“The majority of the game was a drought for us as far scoring,” Burroughs coach Mike Reily said. “Crescenta Valley is a fantastic football team. Their coaching staff always prepares them well and they have a lot of experience. We knew they were going to come out with some great schemes. But what I’m a little bummed about is that we didn’t execute what we prepared for.”

Doyle completed six of 14 passes for 89 yards and running back Drake Barron had 12 carries for 75 yards. Scoring twice for the Falcons on runs of five and one yard was Angel Ochoa.

Ochoa scored both of his touchdowns in the second quarter, the last with 1:18 left, and Crescenta Valley went into halftime with a 21- 7 advantage.

In the third, Doyle scored on a 20-yard run and Chis Wood converted a 32-yard field goal to increase the Falcons’ lead to 31-7 with 20.2 seconds left.

The Falcons capped their scoring when Vincent Parrott scampered for a 51-yard touchdown with 6:28 left in the game.

Burroughs received 125 yards in 28 carries from running back Ben Peters. The Indians struggled with their passing game, as Piper was eight of 18 for 87 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Receiver David Lennstrom had three catches for 65 yards.

“Now we can concentrate on Burbank next week,” Crescenta Valley coach Paul Shilling said. “That game just might just be for the league title.”
