BURBANK — Tevan Khudatyan had quite a workout Monday night.

The Providence High boys’ basketball player worked quickly to find open lanes to the basket, resulting in an impressive effort.

Khudatyan finished with 17 points, including 15 in the first half, to lift host Providence to an 84-49 Independence League victory against Glendale Adventist Academy.

“It’s about being able to know the entire court and where you have to go to score and get your teammates involved,” Khudatyan said. “I got locked in early and we got off to a great start and it’s a huge victory.

“Things went well and we had a lot of guys contributing throughout. We have to keep that going the rest of the way.”

Providence (14-7, 4-2 in league) had four other players reach double-digits scoring en route to besting Glendale Adventist (4-10, 0-6) for the second time in five days. The Pioneers, ranked sixth in CIF Southern Section Division V-AAA and the defending league champion, posted a 69-34 win against the Cougars Thursday on the road.

Khudatyan had 13 points in the first quarter Monday to give the Pioneers a 28-12 lead. He scored on a layup to close out the scoring with two seconds left in the quarter.

“He turned in another huge performance,” Providence first-year coach Brandon Lincoln said. “I liked the way we came out and Glendale Adventist played more man-to-man defense this time compared to playing a zone last week.

“We have a lot of players who can get involved. We only have nine players, but we can be dangerous when we have everybody clicking.”

Providence got 15 points from Collin Ferrell, 12 from Bryce Whitaker and 10 each from Jordan Shelley and AJ Bautista.

Glendale Adventist committed 24 turnovers. The Pioneers had 24 points off turnovers.

“It’s something we have to do a better job at,” said Glendale Adventist coach Marton Medina, who got a game-high 20 points from Joshua Young. “We’ve had trouble with that of late and we need to clean things up. It’s something that can be fixed.

“We’re learning a new system on offense and defense and they are starting to get the hang out of it. We just have to keep developing to get to where we need to be.”

The Cougars got seven points apiece from Pierre Pettigrew and Jonathan Avedisian.
