Mixed results for area boys’ teams in first league match

BURBANK — Peter Kim encountered a whirlwind of emotions during the first Pacific League match Thursday at De Bell Golf Club.

The Crescenta Valley High boys’ golfer recorded two double-bogeys and one triple-bogey through his first three holes. Kim then got on track to turn in a more respectable score.

Kim regrouped to shoot a seven-over-par 78 to finish second and help Crescenta Valley place third in the five-team event.

“It just wasn’t the start I wanted,” Kim said. “I lost two balls in the first three holes and I had to find a way to get back on track after being at seven-over.

“Then I had a couple of birdies and and a par to get me going and I was able to finish up strong. I knew I had to forget about my start and I played much better on the back nine. My long game got better and I started to make some putts.”

Arcadia won with a 407, followed by Burroughs (414), Crescenta Valley (435), Burbank (482) and Pasadena (552). Arcadia’s Josh Kwon finished first with a 77.

Arcadia won the league championship last season with Crescenta Valley and Burbank tying for second and Burroughs placing fourth.

Burroughs freshman Kodiak Hernandez paced the Indians with a 79 on Thursday.

“I felt like I could have done better,” Hernandez said. “I missed some short putts and nothing was falling early.

“I started to hit the fairways on the 10th through 15th holes and then I started to see my short game get better. It’s all about learning.”

The Indians received 83s from Jake Panikowski and Niko Coccio, an 84 from Ryan McGowan and an 85 from Trey Sanchez.

Crescenta Valley got an 88 from Dylan Asprer, 89s from Jayden Chung and Nathaniel Frink and a 91 from Andrew Hong.

JJ Nakao registered an 86 for Burbank, which received a 90 from Hatyden Chase, 94 from Kevin Kienlen, 104 from Nick Toczek and a 108 from Devin Blazon.

“ I think there was a little bit of nerves out there for our guys,” Burbank coach Doug Grimshaw said. “Taking fourth wasn’t what I expected because I feel like we have a team that can finish second or third.

“It’s definitely a learning experience and we’ll try to work on some things and have it all together for the next league match.”

The next league match will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Griffith Park’s Harding Course, followed by a noon start March 15 at Santa Anita Golf Course in Arcadia.
