Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club: Crescenta Valley, St. Francis enjoy huge victories

The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club, in its 75th year, meets Tuesdays at the Elk’s Lodge. The following are odds and ends from the third meeting of the year.

FALCONS, KNIGHTS STAY UNBEATEN

With two games being played within one square block of La Cañada at the same time Friday, leading to plenty of parking lots and streets being jammed, Crescenta Valley High and St. Francis proved to be powerful on the field. The Falcons and Golden Knights posted lopsided nonleague victories and remained undefeated.

Crescenta Valley picked up a 59-20 win against La Cañada and St. Francis rolled to a 49-20 victory versus La Serna.

Some of the late-arriving crowd missed the Falcons (3-0) and Golden Knights (3-0) scoring early in their games.

“It was so great to see a full crowd at the game,” said Crescenta Valley coach Paul Schilling, whose team is ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division VI behind Bishop Diego. “It’s always an interesting game when we play La Cañada because the players know each other. We got up early and led, 49-13, at halftime.”

Just up the driveway, St. Francis, fifth in Division III, built a 42-7 halftime advantage.

St. Francis coach Jim Bonds said he didn’t anticipate the Golden Knights opening up a lead so quickly.

“We came in knowing La Serna liked to run the Wing-T offense and I don’t know if they were nervous after the first couple of plays,” Bonds said. “I liked the fact that for the second straight game we had a chance to get everybody in there to play. That makes for a great week of practice [leading up to the next game].”

Crescenta Valley will begin Pacific League play at 7 p.m. Friday against Hoover (1-2) at Moyse Field. Crescenta Valley won the league championship last season.

St. Francis will travel to face Saugus (2-2) in a nonconference contest at 7:30 p.m. Friday at College of the Canyons in the Santa Clarita Valley. Saugus is eighth in Division VI.

ROAD STAYS KIND TO NITROS

For the second straight game, Glendale won a nonleague road game. The latest came Friday to the tune of a 32-27 victory against Vasquez.

“It’s the first time in a long while I can say Glendale has a winning streak,” Glendale third-year coach George Maiale said. “What a fun game and being able to play it in a small town like Acton, where the entire town seemed to be there.

“You have the crowd yelling at you and you just love that kind of environment. Vasquez came back a little bit toward the end, but it’s fun to be able to go out there and win a close game like that.”

Glendale (2-1) will stay on the road for another week. Glendale will be at Burbank (1-2) in Pacific League opener for both teams. Burbank will play a home contest on its field for the first time since 2008. It normally plays its games at Burroughs’ Memorial Field.

IMPROVED EFFORT FOR VAQUEROS

In two of its first three games, Glendale Community College has had an opportunity to win. Yet, the Vaqueros are 0-3.

Glendale suffered a heartbreaking 27-26 double-overtime nonconference road defeat against Mount San Jacinto on Saturday. Glendale struggled on special teams, missing two field-goal attempts an two extra-point attempts.

“I thought we had a pretty good chance to win, but we spotted them a 20-0 lead and then we rallied,” Glendale coach John Rome said. “We completely controlled the game in the third and fourth quarters and we had possession of the ball for about 47 minutes overall.

“We just missed a field goal at the end of the first overtime to win it. In the second overtime, we had the ball first and scored a touchdown, but we then missed the extra point. They get the ball and score to win it. We’ve hung in there in a couple of games, so there are signs we’re getting better.

Glendale will play host to L.A. Valley (2-0) in a nonconference game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
