Sports Roundup: Glendale college’s Salas, Lopez win at Golden West
MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY
Glendale Community College at Golden West Invitational: Vaquero Raymond Lopez ran to victory in 21 minutes 48.8 seconds in the men’s four-mile race on Friday at Huntington Beach’s Central Park.
Lopez came to a finish comfortably in front of Riverside’s Alec Hall (second, 22:03.1).
Glendale took second as a team with 66 points, as Mount San Antonio College won with 50 points.
In 11th place, Paulo Vazquez was the next Vaquero across the line in 22:45.5 and was followed by fellow scorers Carlos Rivera (13th, 22:48.9), Chris Casarrubia (19th, 22:56.2) and Philip Thomas (22nd, 22:58.5).
WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY
Glendale Community College at Golden West Invitational: In what proved to be an ultra-close team race at Huntington Beach’s Central Park on Friday afternoon, Glendale’s Angelica Salas ran to a dominant victory in the women’s 5,000-kilometer race.
Salas ran to a finish in 18 minutes 58.7 seconds, which was nearly a minute in front of Riverside’s Sarah Hollis (second, 19:57.8). The two were the only runners under 20 minutes.
GCC finished third with 54 points and a meet-best 1:42.49 team time, while Mount San Antonio College (45 points, 1:43.17) won by the smallest of margins over Riverside (46, 1:43.30).
Elsewhere for Glendale, Jennifer Cazares took sixth in 20:26.6. Rounding out the scoring five were Fiona Faulkner (13th, 21:00.0), Nona Boyajyan (16th, 21:09.2) and Genesis Siam-Alvarez (18th, 21:15.2).

Pasadena City College 4, Glendale Community College 2: Glendale lost Friday in nonconference play and dropped to 1-5-2.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Oxnard College 3, Glendale Community College 1: Glendale lost at home Friday in nonconference play and dropped to 1-6.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
L.A. Sacred Heart of Jesus 3, Holy Family 0: The visiting Gaels began Horizon League play Thursday with a 25-19, 25-17, 25-15 defeat. Holy Family (6-6) received 14 assists, five digs and four blocks from Michelle Barraza and 14 digs and six kills from Meghann Velasquez.
Alemany 3, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 1: The Tologs dropped their second straight match in Mission League action Thursday evening at home, 25-14, 25-16, 24-26, 25-19.
Megan Lund tallied 13 kills and 12 digs for Flintridge Sacred Heart (5-8, 0-2 in league), while Maddie Pernecky totaled 16 digs and Cate Doud contributed 23 assists.
