Sports Roundup: Glendale college women, men’s cross-country win WSC titles

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College in Western State Conference Championship: Glendale continued its conference dominance by winning its 13th straight crown Friday in Bakersfield.

Glendale defeated archrival College of the Canyons, 44-70, at Kern County Park.

Angelica Salas paced the Vaqueros with a third-place finish in 18:33.89.

Jennifer Cazares (seventh, 19:21.54) followed for Glendale, while Glendale High alumna Nora Boyajyan (eighth, 19:22.93), Genesis Siam-Alvarez (11th, 19:38.18) and Daisy Romero (16th, 19:52.92) rounded out the scoring.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College in Western State Conference Championship: The Vaqueros finished with 42 points Friday in Bakersfield to win conference for the second straight season.

Glendale held off Ventura, 42-86, at Kern Country Park.

Glendale was led by Raymond Lopez, who won the championship in 20 minutes 8 seconds a year after finishing ninth.

The sophomore was followed by Crescenta Valley High alumnus Philip Thomas (third, 20:33), Akol Malong (seventh, 20;56), Antonio Arroyo (16th, 21:19) and Chris Casarrubia (17th, 21:24).

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Glendale 13, Burbank 10: The Nitros picked up a victory in Tuesday afternoon’s preliminary round of the Pacific League Tournament at Arcadia High.

Arno Tayas led Glendale (12-7, 3-4) with five goals, while Leo Grossman, Nick Schmitt and Stephan Karapetyan added two goals each.

Glendale will face Pasadena (0-6) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Arcadia High.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Prep 3, Providence 2: Visiting Flintridge Prep won Tuesday, 25-27, 25-17, 25-22, 25-27, 15-11, in a nonleague match. The Rebels (13-10) got a huge effort from Ani Bernardi, who contributed 66 assists. Courtney Johnson finished with 20 kills for the Rebels, who got 19 kills and five blocks from Kaitlyn Chen and 37 digs from Ellen Chang.

Holy Family 3, San Gabriel Mission 0: The Gaels finished off the regular season with a victory on senior night over San Gabriel Mission, 25-23, 25-21, 27-25 on Tuesday evening in Horizon League action.

Kaylee Hernandez led the Gaels (16-10, 8-2 in league) with 34 digs, while Michelle Barraza added 17 assists, 12 digs and six aces and Michelle Barraza finished with 11 kills, five aces and 15 digs.

Waverly 3, St. Monica Academy 2: The Crusaders saw their run of seven straight International League championships came to an end Monday. Waverly topped St. Monica, 17-25, 25-20, 23-25, 26-24, 15-9 win.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 3, Mayfield 1: The Tologs finished off the regular season by winning their sixth straight match with a 28-26, 25-21, 23-25, 27-25 win on the road in nonleague play Monday evening.

Megan Lund led Flintridge Sacred Heart (20-13) with 25 kills, Maddie Pernecky contributed 16 digs, Ellis DeJardin finished with 10 digs and Cate Doud added 44 assists.

Flintridge Sacred Heart has now won 20 or matches in five straight seasons.

MEN’S SOCCER

Glendale Community College 1, Victor Valley College 1: The visiting Vaqueros picked up a Western State Conference South Division tie. Glendale is 4-8-4, 3-1-1 in the division.
