Sports Roundup: Glendale girls’ basketball claims league share, Glendale girls’ soccer returns to playoffs

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Glendale 53, Hoover 15: Visiting Glendale won a share of the Pacific League title Thursday against the cross-town rival Tornadoes. Glendale split the league crown with Crescenta Valley and Burroughs and had last won league in 1992.

The Nitros are 19-9, 9-3 in league. The Tornadoes finished 2-22, 1-11.

Flintridge Prep 52, Mayfield 36: The Rebels closed out an undefeated Prep League championship with a victory on Thursday afternoon.

Andie Kim led Flintridge Prep (19-5, 12-0) with 21 points, while Sofia Gonzalez chipped in 10 points.

Flintridge Prep beat Firebaugh, 58-14, on Wednesday thanks to 19 points from Sofia Gonzalez and 10 points from Emma Stellar.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Flintridge Prep 64, Firebaugh 19: Nick Davis scored a game-high 18 points and Kevin Ashworth tallied a career-high 15 as the Rebels won on the road Wednesday night to finish the regular season as Prep League co-champions with Pasadena Poly.

AJ Nicassio chipped in with nine points for Prep (13-11, 7-1 in league).

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Glendale 5, Hoover 0: With a victory at Hoover High on Thursday afternoon, the Nitros clinched fourth place in the Pacific League and an automatic playoff spot, the program’s first since 2004.

Ella Wasson and Taylor Puno had two goals each for the Nitros, while Pearl Navarro also scored in a five-goal first half.

Hoover (2-17-1, 1-10-1) finished sixth in league.

Flintridge Prep 10, Firebaugh 0: The Rebels posted a Prep League road victory Thursday. Flintridge Prep (19-4-2, 10-0 in league) got four goals from Julia Gonzalez.

Alverno 9, Holy Family 1: The Gaels ended their season Tuesday with a Horizon League loss on the road.

Holy Family went 4-13-2, 2-6-2 in league to turn in a dramatic turnaround season after going winless the previous two campaigns.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Crescenta Valley 2, Arcadia 1: The Falcons got two goals from Dallas Kaauwai on Thursday to post a Pacific League win and close out an unbeaten run in league. Crescenta Valley improved to 17-4-3, 10-0-2 in league.

Glendale 2, Hoover 0: The Nitros notched a Pacific League rivalry win to close out the season on Thursday at home.

Glendale (7-8-3, 4-7-3 in league) took fifth place in league, while Hoover (4-12-4, 3-8-3) was seventh.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Arcadia 12, Glendale 7: Glendale got two goals each from Jamie Fritz, Arpa Shahbazian and Liliya Ter-Barsegyan on Thursday in the third-place match of the Pacific League Tournament at Arcadia High. The Nitros are 12-12, 3-5 in league.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 9, Bakersfield College 0: The host Vaqueros rolled to a Western State Conference victory Thursday.

Glendale (3-2, 2-0 in conference) received singles wins from Miah Webb (6-2, 6-4), Srna Lepchevska (6-3, 6-1), Hailey McNall (6-0, 6-1), Sabrina Subero (6-0, 6-0), Ruth Kachatorian (default) and Felicia Moradian (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles, Glendale got wins from Webb and Subero (8-2), Lepchevska and McNall (8-2) and Moradian and Maria Villegas (default).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 55, Barstow College 41: Cheyenne Jankulovski registered 20 points and six steals Wednesday to spur the host Vaqueros in a Western State Conference East game. Glendale (15-8, 5-2 in the division) got 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals from Marlene Salazar.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 80, Barstow College 65: Serigne Athj finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds Wednesday to lift the host Vaqueros in a Western State Conference East contest. Glendale (11-13, 4-3 in the division) received 22 points and 10 rebounds from Jordan Matthews and 12 points apiece from Frank Irowa and Dominic Gully.
