Sports Roundup: Glendale college basketball squads wrap up seasons

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 82, Antelope Valley College 78: In their season finale, five Vaqueros scored in double-digits in Saturday’s Western State Conference East victory at Glendale, led by Serigne Athj’s 18 points.

Athj was nine of 11 from the free throw line and four of five from the field.

Dominic Gully and Derek Lockman had 13 points apiece for GCC, with Frank Irowa chipping in 11 and Jordan Matthews scoring 10. Steven Hubbell added eight points and eight rebounds.

Glendale finished the season at 12-15 with a 5-5 mark in conference to tie for third.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley College 63, Glendale Community College 62: Glendale lost a nailbiter at home Saturday in its season finale.

Cheyenne Jankulovski had a team-high 12 points as nine Glendale players scored.

Deanna Gordillo added nine points and Fabi Jimenez and Angel Castro had eight points each. Brooke Radcliff had seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Glendale finished the season at 16-10 and 6-4 for third place in the Western State Conference East.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 8, Palomar College 6: Lucas Sakay nabbed one of the Vaqueros’ six stolen bases on Saturday and scored on an error for the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning.

Troy Viola singled in Tom Tabak in the eighth for an insurance run as Glendale improved to 8-4 with Saturday’s win on the road.

Viola had three hits and two runs, Tabak had a hit, two walks and two runs and Sakay had two runs and two walks. Grant Mona added a pair of hits and a run, Andrew Tinoco had two runs batted in and Jacob Gribbin had two stolen bases, two walks, a hit, an RBI and a run.

Camren Weitz pitched a scoreless seventh inning of relief for the win and Sean Kretz twirled two perfect innings of relief thereafter for the save.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Puget Sound University 11, Glendale Community College 3 (six innings): The Vaqueros lost at home Saturday afternoon, dropping their sixth straight game to fall to 3-11-1.
