WRESTLING

Hoover at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet: The season concluded for Tornadoes senior heavyweight Azad Markosian, who finished 2-2 and tallied one pin on the first day of action at Temecula Valley High on Friday.

Markosian was the fourth Hoover wrestler in five seasons to advance to the Masters Meet and performed better than any area boys’ grappler. Markosian was pinned in the championship first round by Lawndale’s Amanaki Fahina in 2 minutes, 21 seconds, but recovered in consolation action with a pin in 1:15 over Temecula Valley’s Christian Salgado along with an 8-4 victory over San Jacinto’s Alejandro Alba.

Needing one more win to advance to Saturday’s final day, Markosian was pinned by Santa Margarita’s Nathaniel Clay in 4:21.

“It was nice for Azad to come back after a loss in the beginning and actually wrestle decently for a couple of matches,” Hoover coach Dave Beard said. “I’m happy for Azad and for the school. If we could just get more to buy in and get more kids like Azad, we’ll have more get to Masters and the state level.”
