Sports Roundup: Crescenta Valley boys’ tennis opens league with rout of Glendale

BOYS’ TENNIS

Crescenta Valley 16, Glendale 2: The Falcons (2-0) began Pacific League play Tuesday with a road win.

Kevin Ro lost just one game in a singles sweep for Crescenta Valley.

Burroughs 10, Hoover 8: The host Tornadoes fell Tuesday in a Pacific League-opening match.

BASEBALL

Campbell Hall 11, Glendale 4: Glendale (0-2) dropped a Southern California Invitational contest Tuesday at home.

Armando Alvarez finished two for three with two RBI and Christian Bermudez was two for four with two runs scored for Glendale (0-2).

Valley Christian 6, St. Francis 4: Christian Muro singled in two runs with two outs in the top of a three-run fourth inning, but St. Francis was unable to make the 3-0 lead or a 4-3 lead after the fifth stick, as Valley Christian rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth in a Frozen Ropes Tournament contest.

St. Francis (0-2) received two hits, two walks and two runs from John Politis. Brandon Lewis had four walks, Niko Khoury had two walks and a run and Will Schmidt had a hit, walk and run batted in.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Glendale 13, Mira Costa 9: Glendale began its season Tuesday with a nonleague win. The Nitros received six goals from Erika Lopez and four from Lili Barker and six saves from Ketzia Umana.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Glendale 15, Viewpoint 4: Kevin Flores tallied three goals and two assists to power host Glendale to a season-opening nonleague win Monday.

The Nitros received three goals from Albert Ruballos and two goals from Kevin Perez.

BOYS’ GOLF

Temple City 230, Flintridge Prep 237: The Rebels began their season with a nonleague defeat at Altadena Golf Course. Flintridge Prep received a three-over-par 39 from Ben Sacks.

MEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 9, L.A. Pierce College 0: Visiting Glendale rolled to a Western State Conference win Tuesday. Glendale (6-2, 3-0 in conference) got wins in singles from Christian Hess (6-4, 6-2), Chris Pope (6-0, 6-1), Arin Meserkhani (6-2, 6-1), Kevin Orellana (6-0, 6-0), John Robertson (6-1, 6-1) and Stephen Sandoval (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles, the Vaqueros got victories from Pope and David Preciado (8-5), Hrant Agakhanyan and Chris Ghadimi (8-2) and Andres Simental and Masaki Kimura (8-0).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 6, Occidental College 3: The Vaqueros earned a nonconference victory Tuesday.

Glendale (6-2) got singles victories from Tsukimi Ono (6-1, 6-4), Kanako Kihara (7-6(7-4), 3-6, 6-1), Melody Emmanouildi (1-6, 6-2, 6-4) and Alexa Mendez (6-2, 6-3).

The Vaqueros received doubles wins from Ono and Veronika Galstyan (8-4) and Hailey McNall and Kihara (8-5).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 3, Oxnard College 2: Matt Colomes hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Vaqueros (11-4) a nonconference win Monday at Stengel Field.

Starting pitcher Jason Whaley gave Glendale five strong innings, allowing one run and striking out three. Relievers Gilbert Hernandez and AJ Jimenez held Oxnard at bay and James Giambalvo got the win.

The Vaqueros received a solo homer from Jacob Gribbon in the fourth.
