Sports Roundup: Flintridge Prep girls’ cross-country romps to victory at Mt. SAC

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Flintridge Prep, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, St. Monica Academy at Mt. San Antonio College Invitational: Another week and another Rebels’ victory as Flintridge Prep rolled to a Division V sweepstakes championship Friday afternoon.

The Rebels defeated Francis Parker, 45-85, thanks in part to three top-10 efforts.

Junior Sophie Gitlin set the pace for the Rebels by taking third in 18:37, while sophomores Sasha Codiga (fifth, 18:49) and Jenna Mijares (eighth, 19:06) placed in the top 10.

Seniors Maia Cohen (14th, 19:43) and Natalie O’Brien (15th, 19:45) finished off the scoring.

Flintridge Sacred Heart claimed a top-10 team finish by taking ninth with 260 points in the Division IV blue race.

Bobbie Byrne led the Tologs by placing 41st in 22:38, while Sarah Peterson was 45th in 23:10.

St. Monica Academy was represented by two runners in the Division V blue race, with junior Margaret Short (52nd, 26:54) turning in the best finish.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Flintridge Prep, Hoover, St. Francis, St. Monica Academy at Mt. San Antonio College Invitational: The Rebels turned in a strong second-place effort in the Division V boys’ sweepstakes on Friday afternoon.

Lancaster Desert Christian won the race, 33-68, but Flintridge Prep still crossed its top four through the first 20.

Junior Pattinelli led the charge by placing third in 15:38, ahead of seniors Jonathan Vahala (12th, 16:28) and Riley Coan (13th, 16:37) and sophomore Carson Hansbrouck (18th, 16:52).

Senior Sam O’Hagan closed out the scoring in 26th (17:15).

St. Francis took 10th in the Division IV green race with 266 points.

The Golden Knights had two top-50 finishers in freshman Stuart Serventi (37th, 18:32) and Charles Mayne (44th, 18:49).

Hoover senior Chris Chereque was one of two Tornadoes to compete individually at Mt. SAC and took 47th in the Division III blue race in 18:38.

Like Hoover, St. Monica Academy also had two runners compete and sophomore Mark Golbranson was the top finisher, taking 54th in 20:08.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Hoover 12, Crespi 9: The visiting Tornadoes earned a nonleague win Friday at L.A. Pierce College. Hoover got four goals from Harout Ashkharian, three from Levon Gukasyan and two apiece from David Ashkharian and Robert Akopyan.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Victor Valley College 3, Glendale Community College 0: The Vaqueros lost in Western State Conference South Division play Friday, 25-10, 25-13, 25-11. GCC (3-17, 0-3 in conference) has lost eight in a row.
