Sports Roundup: Glendale college men’s basketball wins overtime battle for second place

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 77, Santa Monica College 74 (overtime): Glendale rallied on the road Saturday night to take a dramatic Western State Conference South Division overtime win that gave it sole possession of second place.

The Vaqueros rallied from a 35-26 halftime deficit to tie it at 63 heading into the extra period, which was won by GCC, 14-11.

Glendale improved to 13-12 and 8-4 in the division, a game ahead of Santa Monica with two left in the season.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Battle of the Regions: Glendale sent a contingent north to Bakersfield College for Friday’s event.

Crescenta Valley High product Matt Manalo and Vahagn Isayan had stellar days.

Manalo won the men’s 1,500-meter run in 4 minutes 4.49 seconds and Isayan won the 3,000 in 9:28.39.

The 1,500 was a boon for GCC, as Isayan was second in 4:05.28 with Alejandro Ambrossio taking fourth (4:07.47) and Shane Thompson finishing sixth (4:08.56).

Manalo also finished second in the 800 in 1:57.31 and Thompson was runner-up in the 3,000 (9:28.42).

In the men’s 3,000 steeplechase, Jhair Torres was second in 10:32.39 with Mauricio Abrego running to fourth (10:36.42).

Jeremy Kimmer turned in a third-place mark of 1.93 meters (6 feet, 4 inches) in the high jump. Kimmer was also third in the pole vault at 4.52 meters (14-10).

Manuel Delatorre took second in his heat and fourth overall in the 200-meter dash in 22.44 seconds.

Glendale’s 4x100 relay was second in 43.18.

Christopher Menjivar threw a fifth-place distance of 39.35 meters (129-1) in the javelin.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Battle of the Regions: GCC headed up to Bakersfield College for Friday’s meet.

Brenda Sanchez ran to victory in the women’s 1,500 meters in a time of 5 minutes 1.67 seconds, just in front of teammate Giselle Masedo, who was second in 5:01.70.

Sanchez also ran to a second-place mark of 10:59.76 in the 3,000.

Masedo was also third in the 800 (2:25.43).

Isis Rodgers turned in a fifth-place time of 1:06.99 in the 400.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Cerritos College 5, Glendale Community College 1: Sydney Jones had a run batted in and Haylee Grace scored in the Vaqueros’ nonconference loss on Saturday.

Bryanna Brito had two of Glendale’s three hits and Stephanie Garner had the other. Madisan Mills drew a pair of walks. Garner also pitched two innings of hitless relief in which she allowed one unearned run and a walk, with one strikeout.

GCC is 2-4-1.
