Sports Roundup: Glendale college men’s track and field racks up WSC titles

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Western State Conference Inland Championships: The Vaqueros tallied seven individual winners, advanced an additional 10 entries out of the finals and took third place on Friday at Bakersfield College.

As a team, Glendale tallied 128 points and was third behind Cuesta (141) and College of the Canyons (135), which marked an improvement from last year’s fifth-place finish.

Freshman Manuel Delatorre was a two-time winner, first capturing the 100-meter dash in 10.88 seconds and following up that effort with a winning mark of 21.62 in the 200.

Sophomore Matt Manalo, a Crescenta Valley High product, also won the 1,500-meter run in 3:58.16, while freshman Shane Thompson was victorios in the 5K in 15:33.85.

Completing the Vaqueros’ dominance in the distances, sophomore Isayan Vahagn won the 10K in 32:02.75, while he was also fourth in the 5K in 15:40.54.

Sophomore Jeremy Kimmer won the high jump in 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches (2.05 meters) and also placed third in the pole vault in 15-3 3/4 (4.67 meters).

The Vaqueros 400-meter relay squad also won in 42.12.

While Glendale’s Alejandro Ambrossio didn’t win an event, the athlete posted three top-six efforts in the 10K (fifth, 32:06.44), 5K (sixth, 15::43.27) and 1,500 (sixth, 4:01.97).

Other top-six efforts came from Keyon Hardin in the 200 (second, 22.08) and 400 (third, 48.80), Matthew Velasco in the discus (fourth, 103-7) and javelin (sixth, 144-10), Christopher Cabrera in the 100 (sixth, 11.31) and the 1,600-meter relay squad (third, 3:19.18)

All top-six efforts earned advancement to the Southern California Preliminaries at Antelope Valley College on May 7.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Western State Conference Inland Championships: While the Vaqueros didn’t produce a champion at Friday’s meet at Bakersfield College, they qualified nine athletes to the Southern California Preliminaries.

As a team, Glendale finished fifth with 54 points, a drop of one spot from last year.

Sophomore Brenda Sanchez was a three-time qualifier, taking second in the 5,000-meter run in 19 minutes, 23.04 seconds. She also finished third in the 1,500 in 5:01.73 and fourth in the 10K in 40:21.44.

Giselle Macedo also took silver as she finished in a time of 4:57.16 in the 1,500.

Agnes Kirakosian was fourth in the 800 (2:23.20), Hoover High alumna Lucki Minassian took fourth in the 5K (19:41.35), Fabiola Naranjo was fifth in the 5K (19:51.69), Gabriela Mungia placed fifth in the pole vault (7 feet, 5 3/4 inches) and the 1,600-meter relay team finished fourth in 4:14.70.

All top-six efforts earned advancement to the Southern California Preliminaries at Antelope Valley College on May 7.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

St. Francis 10, Valencia Valencia 9 (overtime): Hagen Harvey scored the winning goal to spark the Golden Knights on Friday in a nonleague road match.

Evan Swayne had four goals for St. Francis. Harvey and Jacob De La Hoya had two goals apiece for the Golden Knights, who got one from Nick Orlando and Dylan Gomez. St. Francis is 9-8, 3-5 in the Mission League.

SOFTBALL

Crescenta Valley in Thousand Oaks Tournament: In tournament play on Saturday, the Falcons lost to Cabrillo, 14-11, and El Camino Real, 11-6, as they have now lost six games in a row to drop to 12-10.

Sydnee Wells continued her red-hot play as she’s now gone 22 for 30 over the last eight games with 18 runs batted in, 16 runs scored, four home runs and six walks. She was a combined five for seven on Saturday with seven RBI and three runs.

Against Cabrillo, Vivi Bocanegra had three hits, two runs and an RBI. Against ECR, Bocanegra had two RBI. Also against ECR, Alyssa Hernandez was three for four with two RBI and a run.

BOYS TENNIS

Pasadena Poly 10, Flintridge Prep 8: The Rebels lost to their archrivals in Prep League competition Friday afternoon at Pasadena City College.

Flintridge Prep finished the regular season at 7-8, 3-3 in league.
